In fiscal year 2009, our Emergency Assistance Programs met the needs of low income families in the following areas:

  • Emergency food orders were distributed to 7,074 individuals. A typical food order consists of enough food to last 14 days at 3 meals per day.
  • Utility assistance helps to keep natural gas and electricity turned on. 31 households benefited from this program, a total expenditure of $5,862.25.
  • Shelter assistance is used to assist with rental deposits and rent arrears. Samaritan House provided $2,791 to help 8 households.
  • Clothing assistance valued at $6,503.17 was given to 215 individuals through our E-care network.
  • Age and gender appropriate backpacks filled with school supplies and a $20 Payless Shoes gift card were given to 374 children returning to school.
  • 674 food baskets went to familes for their holiday meals at Easter and Thanksgiving.
  • 2,195 Christmas gifts were distributed to 1,119 family members, as well as nursing home and care center patients through our Sharing Tree Program.
  • The NCN (Neighbors Caring for Neighbors) Outreach Clinic received more than 700 visits from patients seeking medical services.
  • Free income tax preparation assistance was given to 102 families or individuals resulting in refunds totaling more than $200,000.
  • In the 2009 fiscal year, Samaritan House volunteers gave 10,530 hours of their time to serve our clients.

Our service area includes the the Villages of Romeo and Armada, the Townships of Armada, Bruce, Ray, and Washington, as well as Shelby and Macomb Township north of 23 Mile. Those interested in receiving assistance, must reside in our service area.
