In the face of an economy troubled by plant closings, lay-offs, and rising unemployment, Neighbors Caring for Neighbors Outreach Clinic (NCN) is providing an anchor for many who find themselves and their families without affordable medical care. The clinic offers free office visits by a Nurse Practitioner to those who are without any medical insurance and have a low income. Although the clinic does not treat emergencies, it does care for family practice needs including diabetes and high blood pressure maintenance, strep throat, flu-like symptoms, asthma, and high cholesterol. The clinic also provides employment physicals and addresses general women’s concerns as well. In addition to medical care, the clinic aids patients in locating and applying for prescription assistance from various pharmaceutical companies.

Last year from October 1, 2008 to September 30, 2009, the clinic served patients with 700 appointments. Our client profiles range from a child who is awaiting MI Child enrollment; to the single parent working at a part-time job without benefits; to an elderly patient who does not have Medicare doctor office coverage. Statistically speaking, about 28% of our patients are unemployed while 38% hold either full-time or part-time jobs. In addition, a little less than 35% are living below the Federal Poverty line.

For several years, NCN has been a collaborative effort between Samaritan House and Henry Ford Health Care. The staff consists of a Nurse Practitioner and two medical office assistants. However, the clinic’s operation would be greatly curtailed without the aid of its volunteers. We are indebted to the parish nurses and general office assistants who cheerfully give of their valuable time.
